Anton Walbrook, who featured in many P&P films, was a great and duly famous actor in his era.

However, there is much less known about his life than his work. What we have found are mostly basic facts culled from places like Wikipedia, and other sources (see the Biography page). But if you know anything interesting about Anton please tell us.

Either visit the discussion board called 'Unvarnished Anton' or email webmaster@antonwalbrook.co.uk.

Thanks!

"He really is a fantastic actor" - Stephen Fry
"...my favourite actor" - David Mamet
"Preposterously romantic..." - Simon Callow

The Anton Walbrook Website

Welcome to antonwalbrook.co.uk. This site is dedicated to Anton Walbrook, an Austrian-born actor who fled Nazi Germany and became a fairly famous actor in Britain. He had major roles in the Life and Death Colonel Blimp, the Red Shoes, 49th Parallel (all Powell and Pressburger films) and others listed in this site's Filmography. He died in 1967 and is buried in Hampstead, London.

As you can see, this is just the intro. If you've already read this,
check out the News Page. If not, keep reading!

Why dedicate a website to him? Well, he was a superb and charming performer with a compelling, quiet intensity and possibly the most appealing voice ever commited to film. His silvery Austrian-tinged accent was the result of a great desire to achieve flawless English pronunciation and is quite beguiling, as you can hear in the Media Files page. Although the brilliant P&P website has a wealth of information on Anton, I felt that this man really deserved his very own site - so this is it.

I hope antonwalbrook.co.uk will become the kind of site I was looking for when I became an AW fan. I wanted one place to go to for all the information available. As such this site has:

  • links to existing webpages about Anton (mostly on the P&P site),

  • bits and pieces of information culled from other sites (all credited),

  • a discussion board to make comments, ask questions, or to contribute information/photos etc.

It's this very last bit that would be most appreciated. AW was a reserved man (more about this in the Biography page) and details about his life are few and far between. If you know something about him that isn't here, please tell us! Email webmaster@antonwalbrook.co.uk or join the discussion board. Thanks in advance if you can help.
